Riding ability

You should have a minimum age of 10 years and be riding fit and strong. For the sake of our horses we have a maximum weight limit of 85kg, 13.5 stone or 187lbs for our safaris. For our endurances and mountain trails our weight limit is 80kg, 12.8 stone or 176 lbs.

We have to take the safety and enjoyment of our horse(s) as well as yourself and other riders into consideration. Therefore we require the following level of competence:

  • you are confident at all paces and can control a (very) forward going horse across vary varied terrain

  • you can rise/post to the trot

  • you can stand in your stirrups when in canter/gallop

  • you have a balanced and independent seat

  • you can (dis)mount independently

  • you have horse sense

We reserve the right to prevent any guest from riding if we feel they do not fulfill the competence level detailed above. If you are not riding regularly we strongly recommend that you get in practice before joining us on safari.

Please contact us if:

•    you exceed our weight limit

  • 85kg for our safari rides

  • 80kg for our endurances

•    you are a novice rider accompanying a group of experienced riders

You must be insured to ride with us. Please ensure your policy covers you for horse riding and includes medical evacuation and medical aid. Many insurance companies will not insure your holiday unless you are wearing a hard hat or safety helmet whilst in the saddle. It is your sole responsibility to provide your own properly fitted hard hat or safety helmet.

You must be fully aware of and understand the risks involved when around horses, in riding generally and in riding, visiting and staying in remote areas in Africa due to the presence of wild and potentially dangerous animals. For these reasons you will be required to sign an indemnity form before you ride on our safaris, endurance competitions and/or any other horse riding activity confirming that you do so entirely at your own risk and that you have adequate insurance for all eventualities.

Okapuka Horse Safaris or any of its employees cannot be held responsible for any accidents or injuries that may happen while handling horses and/or during the riding.

To guarantee your booking we require a deposit of 25% of the total sum. This deposit is non-refundable. The remaining amount needs to be paid 30 days before arrival at Okapuka Horse Safaris.

Cancellation policy:

  • 50% of the total amount for cancellations between 45 and 30 days before arrival date

  • 75% of the total amount for cancellations between 29 and 15 days before arrival date

  • 100% of the total amount for cancellations between 14 and 0 days before arrival date

  • 100% of the total amount for no-shows

These terms and conditions apply not only for our safaris, but also for our endurance competitions (hard hat is mandatory) and any other horse riding activities. Okapuka Horse Safaris strongly advises all riders to wear a hard hat.
